Is EmergenC Safe?

I have had a few questions recently about Emergen-C, from people who are worried that EmergenC Might be unsafe.

The good news is, it is very safe to use.  Vitamin C is vary hard to overdose on, which makes Vitamin C boosters such as EmergenC a qick and easy way to boost your Vitamin C levels when you need them.  While I would not suggest taking these kind of products for long periods of time, they are a great immune system booster and can help you recover from mild illnesses

If you want to take EmergenC I would suggest buying it in bulk though, since single packets are way more expensive!

If you are on and medication or have issues you should however seek medical advice before taking any supplement!

Vitamin C Toxicity

Vitamin C Toxicity is a rare condition caused by prolonged overdosing of Vitamin C.  Since Vitamin C is water soluble and is not stored in the body itself, it makes it difficult to overdose. Despite this continual ingestion of large amounts can cause vitamin C toxicity, which does have some nasty (if mostly minor) side effects.

Most symptoms of Vitamin C toxicity effect your digestive system.  Kidney problems and diarrhea are the more common problems that will arise, but even so, they are rare..

If you do feel as though you have taken too much Vitamin C and are concerned about Vitamin C toxicity you should see a doctor. However, if you have just ingested a large amount of the vitamin, the simplest way to prevent a toxic overdose is simply to drink a large amount of water over the next few hours.

Choosing the right Vitamin C Supplements

It's not hard to find vitamin C supplements, but what many people don't realize is that some are much, much better than others.

If you have decided to take vitamin C supplements, whether in tablet, soluble, or drink form, you will want top keep these three key factors in mind.

  • Zinc
  • Amount of Vitamin C
  • Do they release the Vitamin C immediately or over time?
Zinc is surprisingly important, and is a key element that helps your body absorb the vitamin C. Most supplements now contain zinc if they provide vitamin C, but make sure before you buy!

You might also want to check the amount of Vitamin C contained in your supplement. Some limit to below the RDA, others (Such as immunity boosters) can contain up to 10,000 times the RDA.  This seems a little extreme (And it is) since most of what your body doesn't absorb is passe din your urine, infact the third point is hte only way to make higher levels of vitamin C worth taking.

When you buy a vitamin C supplement always look for supplements that release the vitamin C over time.  This will help make sure that the maximum amount is absorbed in to your body, and less is wasted.

Follow these simple rules and you will get the best vitamin C supplement for your money!

Don't forget though, it is sometimes better to take complete supplements that provide a boost to all the vitamins and minerals you need.

Can You Overdose on Vitamin C?

One of the most common questions I receive on this site is Can you Overdose on Vitamin C?

This is a valid question, and one that is not that easy to answer, but the best response is

'Not Easily'.

Vitamin C is water soluble, which means that if you take too much, most of it will simply be passed through your system in your urine.

Despite this high levels of vitamin C, continually overdosing, can cause a few nasty side effects, including diarrhea and even mouth ulcers.

Can a Vitamin C Overdose be Fatal?

While you can overdose on Vitamin C it would be immensely hard to fatally overdose on vitamin C, and definitely could not be done by accident.  You would have to ingest vast amounts of the vitamin, and death would most likely be caused by the side effects rather than a direct issue from the overdose.

Current medical texts say that it is not possible to fatally overdose from Vitamin C, but you should not try it.

Three Simple Ways to Increase Your Vitamin C Intake

We all know Vitamin C is an important part of any diet, but when you think back to what you have eaten over the last few days, did you ever once consider whether you should focus more on Vitamin C?

For the most part it really is very easy to increase your Vitamin C intake.  Most fruits have this particular ascorbic acid, and plenty of vegetables do too.

Nevertheless, even with the wide range of fruits and vegetables available in stores around the world, it is easy enough to let your Vitamin C intake drop dramatically.

Don't worry though, today we have three simple ways to increase your Vitamin C intake!

Eat some Oranges

Sounds ludicrously simple doesn't it?

Oranges are a brilliant way to increase your vitamin C intake, and they taste great!  If you don't manage to eat an orange a day, at least two or three a week can help improve your Vitamin C levels.

Take Suppliments

If it is hard for you to get fresh fruit every day, don't despair.  There are plenty of Vitamin C supplements on the market, many of which also contain complementary vitamins and minerals to ensure you absorb the Vitamin C effectively.

Have a Drink!

Before you get excited, no, alcoholic beverages son't supply vitamins. But! Most towns and cities have juice bars that will mix up some delicious juices and smoothies which not only taste great, but also contain a vast amount of healthy things that your body needs.  Nearly any good juice concoction will be dripping with Vitamin C
